A Vineyard’s Triumph: The Story Behind Vine Wrangler’s 2022 Highland Estate Pinot Noir

Posted by Sydney Manning on 31st Oct 2024

As the warm hues of fall descend upon Sonoma County, the team at Vine Wrangler eagerly prepares to release a wine that tells the story of a vineyard, a growing season, and the vision of a real estate lawyer turned vineyard owner and winemaking enthusiast, whose passion now lies in crafting exceptional wines. The 2022 Highland Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir, a gold medal winner at the 2024 Sonoma County Fair, is more than just a wine—it’s a testament to the artistry and dedication of Mark Strombotne, founder of Vine Wrangler.

Mark brings a unique set of skills to the vineyard from his days of ranching and wrangling horses. The discipline, patience, and hands-on approach he learned from working the land have translated seamlessly into managing a vineyard. After years spent behind a desk as a lawyer, it's refreshing for him to dive back into the physical, rewarding work of tending the vines and connecting with the land in a way that reminds him of his roots.

Mark stands amidst the rows of vines, taking in the landscape that has shaped his vision. "This vintage feels different," he says, his eyes reflecting both excitement and reverence. "There’s something about the fruit this year—it’s got a certain energy, a depth that feels truly special."

The Season of Balance

The 2022 vintage was unique, shaped by a dry winter followed by unexpected frost and hail in the spring, just after budbreak, which significantly reduced the crop. Despite these challenges, a warm growing season set the stage for an early fall harvest, resulting in exceptional quality and rich flavors. Our Vine Wrangler Pinot Noir from this vintage is especially concentrated, boasting remarkable depth and complexity that promises a beautiful drinking experience for years to come.

"Patience was key this year," winemaker Ashley Herzberg explains. "We wanted to wait for that perfect moment when sugar, acidity, and phenolics were all in harmony. I think we nailed it."

Both Herzberg and Strombotne are excited about the wine’s potential. With its structure and complexity already showing in the winery, they expect the 2022 Pinot Noir to age beautifully over the next decade. "This is Pinot Noir at its finest," Herzberg concludes.

A Tapestry of Flavors

In the glass, the 2022 Highland Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir bursts to life. Aromas of black cherry, sandalwood and hints of pepper dance on the nose. The palate is intense and concentrated with chewy cherry, pepper, sandalwood and lots of black and red fruit tones lingering on the palate. The tannins are dense but complementary to the wine and the finish is bright with deep fruit notes.

Mark describes it best: “What I love about this Pinot Noir is the way it balances power and finesse. You get these bold fruit flavors, but they’re softened by an earthy complexity. It’s a wine you’ll want to keep exploring with every sip.”

A Legacy of Excellence

This year’s release is not just another bottle for the Vine Wrangler team—it’s the continuation of a legacy. The 2022 Highland Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir has already garnered one gold medal, and with each new vintage, the pressure to uphold that reputation intensifies. But Mark is confident this year’s wine not only meets but surpasses expectations.

“We’ve crafted something really special here,” he says with a smile. “I think our fans will taste the care that went into every step of the process.”

As the leaves turn and the harvest season comes to a close, Vine Wrangler invites you to share in the fruits of their labor. The 2022 Highland Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir is more than a wine—it’s a story of passion and the incredible journey from vine to bottle.
